This drawing won ‘Best in Section’ for Drawings at the 2018 Calgary Stampede Western Showcase.
After drawing ‘Toto’, I wanted to find another shot that had the depth-of-field effect, and I came across a great photo of Black Joe Lewis pointing his guitar at the camera. I couldn’t track down the photographer to get permission, so the idea languished for a year or two. After having then done a couple projects where I arranged the shoot of the subjects with the help of some photographer and model friends, I realized I could probably create the shot myself and started wondering who I knew that had a guitar…
Having drawn one half of local musical duo Jocelyn & Lisa, I realized two things: (1) I should complete the duo by drawing Lisa, and (2) she’s all about that bass! Well, not ALL about it – quite a musical Swiss Army knife, in fact- but if you’ve been around Calgary’s music scene at all and seen her play before, you’ll recognize the red bass guitar as basically a part of her. Thus, the title ‘Extension’ has a couple of meanings for this one, literally extending the instrument towards the viewer, but showing this notion of the instrument being an extension of the artist herself.
With graphite there obviously isn’t any of this red on display, but I gave the image a slightly glowing vibe to it to electrify the look a little (we were clearly doing an ‘unplugged’ shoot). I’m a little sorry that we covered Lisa’s face because like Jocelyn, she’s got a million-dollar smile. But I like the mystery look, love that we captured the original image I had mind, and it’s fun to hear people wonder who this is…
